Opens on Thursday, September 24 | 6 PM | Schomburg Center. Working across various media, the 21 artists featured in this exhibition engage with wide-ranging themes, including the iconography of the Black woman’s body, storytelling, futurism, spirituality, and the mapping of Black history. These recent acquisitions acknowledge the importance of Black women artists and advance the Schomburg Center’s ability to represent, preserve, and share more dimensions of our expansive Black culture. Experience Forging Ahead: Recent Acquisitions of Black Women Artists, a new exhibition of work by Black women artists recently added to the Schomburg Center’s collections. The exhibition features works by Simone Leigh, Tschabalala Self, Nona Faustine, Barbara Jones-Hogu, Xenobia Bailey, Helina Metaferia, Firelei Baez, and Janet Taylor Pickett. Forging Ahead is curated by La Tanya S. Autry, Associate Curator, Photographs and Prints, and Tammi Lawson, Curator, Art and Artifacts.
